Book Review: Jon Gordon / Training Camp

This is the story of a great football player Martin and a inspring Coach Ken – a inspirational book about winning habits that seperate the best from the rest.
Martin was a great football player and he was not yet at the top of his game. He arrived in the training camp and got the chance to play as a rookie in the NFL but soon got hurt and had to face lot of challenges and pressure towards an ultimate win. If that would not bring enough worries the guy also head a ill mother. Martin had a headcoach who cares also about the injured players and gave him best mental support. He adressed him very directly if he is willing to be outstanding and once he agreed he got supported with a “Playbook” and this booklet guided him towards the steps to be great. All the time Martin got the inspiration he visit coach Ken in the office. This guy, who was eating Fish-Tacos every day and was there for his players shared fantastic wisdom with him, he let him often come very early in the morning, once took him to a fishing trip at 5:00am and treated him to adrress his fears, a step which is essential for playing on the top.
Training Camp describes the habits in wonderful lectures, about having a purpose, making the small and ordinary things better, focus and dedicate, size the moment which means to be ready when the
Make ordinary things better and get mentally stronger. Mental and Emotional strength has to be bigger and stronger than your challenges, detractors and situations you face; your attitude is like a garden that has to be nurtured and weeded out.
The first time I got in touch with this book was soon after it was published when Jon gave a free Webinar. On that inspirational session followed his playbook which is at Jons website available. The book describes beautiful those lectures you can never get enough in your life and can't get repeated often enough.
Jon Gordon has worked with numerous NFL, NBA and College teams as well as Fortune 500 companies. After delivering a speech to the Atlanta Falcons a NFL team who read his books he got the idea for this book.
In the end of the book, obviously Martin made it successful through the Training Camp and become a professional Football Player. But this is not enough, Martin traveled through the country and inspired people with the wisdom of his coach who had left a legacy.
If you strive to win, put this book on your reading list!

Valve – Insights in a flat organization

Recently reading an IHT article about a top game company got my immediate attention: It was about a company called Valve Cooperation , which developed games like Half-Life and Counter-Strike and has a truly amazing organization culture: No Job Titles, no reporting, 100% self chosen projects. Time to find out more:
Hiring is the most important skill for this almost 300 employee big enterprise. They do not believe in hiring “downhill”, staff that is less skilled than they are current, their new hires should be stronger and “do I want this person to be my boss?” - is a central question. People who work for Valve get first comfortable with the culture through a “New Employee Handbook” which is also available for the public. In less than 40 pages they describe all what is relevant. Desks have Wheels, as a symbolic reminder to move where people can make themselves most valuable for the business as well as set up their desk where they want to work. Where -this is a question they can decide by themselves. They provided a few central questions but the staff is encouraged to talk and network and move where it makes best sense. Where they are in the building does not matter, in order to find themselves they can look in their Intranet where they are based at the moment. “Structure happens” is key value and job-descriptions are reliant to their group goals. Job titles do not exist internal, as well as managers; just to the outside where it is relevant.
The employee performance of the staff which powers the private owned company will be measured in a annual peer review meeting as well as pull out feedback; compensation will first be given according employees expectations and then by a “stack ranking” which includes very view KPI's. They pay better than competitors and believe that it is relevant to put most money back in their employee pockets. Working overtime is free of choice but not encouraged – they see it from a value point of view: Having hired the best people is their hardest work; let them choose work-life-balance is vital. Very encouraged on the other hand is to make them most valuable for the organization.
Their believe is binding people on a desk and tell them what to do will obliterate their talent. So therefore they pay the price what it takes to keep this structure running. Having a growth goal or increasing short time goals did not go along and participating to the culture is vital, cause everyone can be a decision maker here and each single person can take big over big responsibility.

Book Review: Jon Gordon / The No Complaining Rule

Negativity costs the US economy 250-300 billion USD annually according the Gallup organization and this number I even conservative since it doesn't include the ripple effect. But what is it good for? Nothing! Of course, it is important to bring up solutions and in order to bring up good solutions it is also necessary that you encourage your staff. And complaining is obviously the wrong approach.
There are not many books that demonstrate how to built a complaint free organization culture. And the No Complain rule is unique. Typical for Jon Gordon it gets delivered in a story and supported with a wide range of free tools, tips, online posters, videos, a collateral website.
Hope, a Human Resources Director in a Computer company and a single mum plays the central character in the story. The company has a corporate scandal going on because some of their computer batteries inflamed. The attitude was already on fire but not positively and Hope was very down when she entered the company since a few month. Beside of the troubles her kids, the traffic and some worrying health results caused her she was surrounded by Energy Vampires, staff that didn't trust the company anymore and even bloggers from within the company who produced negative content. Fortunately they had a clear thinking CEO who commands fast to replaced the battery problem and detected the actual problem: Negativity. Therefore he appointed Hope to develop a plan. Within a two weeks period. Hope makes many discoveries, gone for research, worked hard, looked toward the reasons of the negativity and dedicated with full passion to help the company to move away from negativity through the development of a No complaining rule. Inspired by her doctor, approved in her family she took what it takes to enroll the concept to the workplace, turned problems into solution and created the rapid and lasting outcome of a positive work culture.
Short and easy to read, Jon Gordon gives you with that book a universal approach to remove complaints and create a positive environment.

Rein gar nichts!

For Friends

Deutsche Version siehe unten.
Yesterday was my birthday. I spent the day in Dublin were I live since 8 month now. Although I have nice friends here, I'm away from most of my friends and loved ones. And so many of them wrote on my facebook wall sending me birthday wishes. I answered and thought about each of them. Amazing! Since I lived on quiet a few places, traveled a lot and was never the typical guy who hang out with the same dudes, I met so many people on so many places and had great times here, there and everywhere.
Thinking on all of this people allowed me to travel. In thoughts to all this places of my memory and to all the past times. Yes it felt like time traveling and this a wonderful thing. And I was thinking to spend more time with my friends. That is was most people say when they last day come again, if they can live another time many would spend more times with friends. Don't we often think „I should call him or her?“ „I should met again with them“ etc.? And if that thoughts come up, and I speak for myself as well, we often take not the action it takes. It is little, just calling a few digits of a number, just walk 10 or 15 minutes, take a bus a few stops and you are there and can share nice conversations, past memories, smiles and hugs! You can add more live to live! Let as move and just call us! Love you all!

Faszinierend!

In memory of Stephen R. Covey, 1932-2012

Deutsche Version siehe unten.
Stephen Covey one of the greatest authors of success literature passed away in the age of 79 today. The idea of his most famous book “The 7 Habits of High Effective People”, a book that it is considered to the most influential books ever written, came first in the 70's. Their the author from Utah, who later sold more than 20 million books wrote a doctor thesis about 200 years of success literature. And out of the great wisdom of this man a model, simple in it's understanding and astonishing in it's power was created: The Seven Habits Paradigm. Reading the 7 habits allows you to move from dependence on Independence to finally “Interdependence”.
I took this journey not so long ago. I was on a seminar and heard a lesson about teamwork and their the Trainer mentioned the term Interdependence and Steve Covey. My curiousness grew and the hunger of study his work was there. A high sense of Independence I already felt for myself but those Interdependence, a state that requires Independence was what really unlocked untapped resources within me. “Seek first to be Understand – then to be understood”, “Synergize” and my favorite “Think Win / Win” are those steps that allow you to get the best out of a team, a group, a family and discover new heights of success.
Tony Robbins said “Fundamentals are the key to success. Stephen R. Covey is a master of them”. With his habits he made millions of people more successful, he brought peace into thousands of organizations and team around the world. But he also understand to contribute to peoples personal lives, demonstrate that his fundamentals fit to families and education of children as well. This man won an international Man of Peace award, one a national Fatherhood Award and was mentioned by Time Magazine to the 25 most influential Americans.
With Stephen R. Covey the world lost an outstanding man but his literature will inspire generations!

My book review of the 7 Habits:

Great Words:
“Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall.”
“There are three constants in life... change, choice and principles.”
"Seek first to understand, and then to be understood.“

Tolle Zitate:
“Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall.”
