Last time at the, The Shed Skatepark, Cranebourne, VIC, Australia, I met Chris Palmer, a Skater and father of two sons, Keegan and Bryson, who love to skate as well. His kids are really good for their age and I saw that Chris was very passionate and open minded about skateboarding and because of this his children excelled. Later I had the pleasure to join him and his family with Renton Millar for a coffee. They discussed some ideas and Chris showed pics on his iPad about a Skate facility he built. What a great indoor spot! A nice Miniramp with Bowl Corners, an Extension and a Roll In. The right size for kids to get speed and improve their skills and for every skater to have some good times at the ramp. There is nothing comparable on the Gold Coast.

Chris, how did the idea come to build a indoor ramp?
There were quite a few reasons. We just got back from a trip to California where almost every good skater aged 7-11 had their own ramp or had access to a perfect indoor facility, such as Vans "The Block". We couldn't see how our boys could compete in skills development with the talent we saw in the US in boys and girls aged 7-11 without it. This provides the boys an environment where they can focus on learning tricks without any distractions. We also thought a lot of the public parks miss the mark and wanted something world class.
What do you get out of it? Was it worth it?
It takes quite a bit of stress out of your life when you have an indoor park you can skate whenever. We all know juggling business / school / family / life takes time. For us and our crazy lifestyle this solves a lot of problems. The factory is like a second living room Cindy (Chris' wife) has set it up wonderfully. We can all hang out and skate, work and do homework there as if we were at home. It is well worth it. Both Keegan and Bryson have improved quicker and this has increased their confidence to tackle harder challenges outside of the factory.
Do you have any suggestions for parents supporting their kids passions, like you do with your sons skateboarding?
Yes, do it. I think adults under estimate children. Today we have teenagers sailing around the world, and 6-8 year old skaters doing backside airs in the Vans Combi Bowl. If you give your children a platform they can build on regardless of sport they will excel. This creates confidence in the kids where they hunger for more. This all takes work as a parent, but if you son or daughter has a gift it should be woven into their daily routine just like homework or brushing your teeth.

Many thanks, Chris
