Book Review: Malcom Gladwell: David and Goliath

(German below / Deutsch siehe unten)

On some authors we have expectation? We want to get something out? And as Malcom Gladwell served us with great reads the expectations on his new book were quite huge? And it's a brilliant masterpiece.
Gladwell knows how to surprise the reader with short abstracts with curious twists and ends. And this is so much part of his new book “David & Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants”. The story of the Bible draws in how a small or underprivileged party actually have advantages.
It goes like a red line between beautiful essays: That smaller school classes or elite universities are not always better (the opposite can even better), that people with legastenia have often an advantage in live, how people in WW2 London overcome fear of bombing, how criminal rates could decrease and even how could family members deal with losing a loved one by a murder. The comparison of an astonishing part of Gladwell's writing. For example he compared the twentieth century troubles of Northern Ireland with that of a school class where there are some respect issues in between pupils and the teacher.
Very powerful was that “David and Goliath” point out a live phenomenon of inverted U-curve. This is about that certain things make an advantage until a certain point and if it gets to much it causes a disadvantage. Like Goliath in the Bible, the giant warrior was well equipped while David was through less clutter way more faster and flexible. Or that beyond a certain family income it would be hard to teach a child about money. Money is necessary to have a live out of problems but with less you can say “I couldn't afford” while with more money you have to tell your children “I don't want to afford” which is harder to say. As this book is well researched it has a lot of footnotes which are all else then boring. On the inverted U it mentioned  the Psychologists Barry Schwartz and Adam Grant who have written a paper that nearly everything of consequence follows an inverted U.
Yes, you could follow all the notes and get to the ground how Mr. Gladwell comes to all those facts and knowledge which created the picture of this title. As well as you could just enjoy this read with ease and imagine yourself regardless if you are in challenges, troubles, facing a lack of material resources or with dozens of choices that you can be the hero who have massive life advantages by maintaining a positive and grounded attitude.

Malcom Gladwell - Outliers

Move Freely and Access Somatic Resources

(Deutsch siehe unten / German see below)
This was an enlightening moment for me: I was at NLP University and there was an optional 5 rhythm dance course. My teacher, a leading personality in the field of NLP mentioned a research study that scientists observed the movements of adults and toddlers and found out that toddlers move in a thousand ways in an hour while adults just have few, very similar movement patterns. We students got introduced to move our bodies in a thousand different ways.

It felt I was new born. To often as a kid and teenager I was told how to move my body. Or more often to sit still. There is so much life energy stored in me which is waiting to dance, to came out.
For me as a skateboarder I found a great way how I be with what's in me. However off the board it felt quite new. All is okay. I'm allowed to move freely, the way I am are.
As we know how fast toddlers learn in their first year of life in my point of few the movements are related to accessing creativity and playfulness which supports learning.

There is knowledge in the body. There are millions of nervous cells which got stimulated by our movements and postures and link directly to our brain.
If you say „listen to my heart“, „I have this feeling in my gut“, „get in touch with“ or „feel grounded on my feet“ you are accessing resources out of your somatic mind. It's more than just think with your head, you might be more relaxed and certain things become more obvious.

You can get more access to joy, intelligence and creativity through your body through certain activities of mind-body-awareness. Dancing, yoga, martial arts, running, walking, surfing or skateboarding are good examples. I would especially recommend you to do some forms where you allowed to move freely and can do whatever you love to do.

Charles Darwin had a “thinking path” next to his house where he walked each day and got certain resources, Mozart was most creative when he traveled in a coach or went for a walk after a good meal and Einstein got ideas on his sailboat.
Now I'm curious how certain activities enriched yourself?
What are good ways to use your somatic resources?
GW

People Are All the Same - And the Map is not the Territory.

Deutsch siehe unten. German below.
As I came across this video by Deloitte I was very happy to find such a great piece that point it out. We are all different. Bosses at work place are such a great example. What Boss A values is different then Boss B.
Once I had a boss who was very paper orientated. She want to see an act which means that I came with a folder, containing a few sheets which are relevant to this project. Each time I asked her I made sure that I had writing pad and a pen that I could make my notes and go ahead. Another boos was a real Blackberry guy. As an IT Manager he seems to be available 24/7, expected quick responses via mail and delegates via e-mail. When he wanted to talk to me, I remember, I kinda drove him nuts when I came with notebook and pen. And my intend was that nothing got missed, as I carefully learned with a previous boss.
It's beautiful that we are not all the same. And yes, our diversity requires flexibility. While the millenium generation is expected to have 15-20 jobs over their working live, as this Forbes article  points out there is huge demand not only to adapt to people, also to communicate. Ask for your other persons preference and point out how you work and what do you value at work.
NLP is built on a few presuppositions and one of the main is “the map is not the territory”. It means that we never know the reality. We just know perceptions which are based on our senses and influenced by past experiences, our expectations and internal states. Through that point of few it's important to be curious and playful. Do gain interests in other peoples maps of the world. As more we do, as richer and more diverse our live experience grow!

60 years of the 4 minute mile

It was on may 6th 1954 that the first man who broke the record to run one mile below 4 minutes. 60 years from today, it was Rogers Bannister who run it on the Iffley Track Road at Oxford University.
The interesting fact was that it was considered impossible that a human could break this barrier.

Bannister start a normal daily routine, took the train from London to Oxford and does not even consider to run the race due to the windy conditions that afternoon. Just half an hour before he decided to join and just before the race the wind stopped. As he noticed that the single track time got really good he speed up and got faster, lap by lap. At the end of his powers he realized the broken record.
And it took just 46 days. It was the Australian runner John Lundy who run twice the time 4:02 prior and worked on it the same time in Finland came underneath that magical mark.
Was it that someone first has to belief in something? Or how could it be that this never reached time in the history of mankind was that quick broken? And almost 200 people broke this former record within the next nine years?

What do you think are similar records people are able to break soon?
What are boundaries you belief you can overcome yourself?

Messages From the Universe – receive them at the right time on strange places

(German see below / Deutsch siehe unten)
Was it four or five years ago or even longer? My friend Mine installed an App on her i-Pod Touch called “Yes I can”.
It was some kind of an (old school) e-book which covers topics like how to visualize, what kind of affirmations we need an so on. It also stated that you need to be ready to go with it. If you not ready yet close it and came back some time later.
Although the i-Pod Touch become her trusted music companion when Mine was on the road apps like that got somehow forgotten.

Now, years later a period of change and new decision has started for her. And on the way back from a weekend trip she browsed through her music, her device and she found exactly this app which was not present at all. For her, being advanced in the field of personal development she knows a lot about the contents. But repetition, having things present when you need them and recalling what's good for you is an essential skill.
For her it was like a letter from the past. As time would be capsuled.
As she told me that we both agreed that messages from the universe appear unpredicted, often on weird places to the best time in a great intensity.

I can“-Applikation in Präsenz.

Book Review: Ilaria Vilkelis - Your Happy Home Quest

(English Version only)
When you buy or rent a home you make a decision that will affect your future. Maybe months, years or a lifetime. How do you decide? How to you find a place that suits you. You, your families and loved ones interests, daily habits, rituals and life style.
Do you value to sit with your family together for dinner? If, is your table big enough and does it suit?
Do you want a lively living room but prefer also space to study without interruption? Why not combine your sleeping room with your working room and make the living room as a space for social gathering?
Considerations like that are now put together by Ilaria Vilkelis. She is a coach, NLP Master Practitioner and has lived in several countries and various kinds of home, some where fulfilling with her lifestyle, some not. She is sharing her personal experience, experience of friends as well as her professional know how in this book which is ideal if you go for a new home. Or actually underrated, it can safe you lot of money and troubles as it guided you toward your decision for a happy home. And your happy home can be anything, it could be a common model of living but it also could be something far from traditional thinking.

With 164 pages this self published work is a quick read which is a good way in my opinion as a new home is often chosen in periods of change where we are often quite occupied.
It's available as paperback via Amazon as well as a kindle edition. The 16.81USD for the paperback or 10.18 for the kindle ed is definitely a great investment, even if you pick one small thing from the book to consider for your new home, I'm sure it pays off.

Infinite Possiblities – Creating a fufilling life

Dorien De Vidts is an international speaker, trainer, facilitator and coach in the field of communication, personal leadership and wellbeing. Home in Belgium she enjoys traveling, making music and magically inspires the presence of people who have the pleasure to be around with her. She is a certified “Infinite Possibilities” coach by Mike Dooley and shaped the workshop “Infinite Possibilities – Creating a Fulfilling Life” which is on March 8th in Vienna, Austria. More about this, here: http://slidesha.re/LWaUnH
As a co-host it's a pleasure to ask her a few question about the upcoming workshop.

GW: What does Infinite Possibilities mean for you?
Dorien De Vidts: Infinite possibilities is about the amazing potential we as human beings have to craft our lives into whatever we want it to be. Everything is possible. It makes me think of a quote of Audrey Hepburn, she says <Nothing is impossible, the word itself says “ I’m possible”>. That is what it means to me, whatever we want, whoever we want to be, it is possible if we truly believe it in the core of ourselves and put our hearts and minds into it and take action. I realize it sounds like such a cliché and clichés are clichés for a reason, there is truth at the heart of them. I remember when I wanted to become a trainer after only one year of real work experience. A lot of people told me that I was too young, that it wasn’t possible now. They probably had a point, however I decided to keep believing it was possible now. A couple of months later I met people in the training business that gave me a chance.

What can someone learn from the Infinite Possibilities workshop?
This workshop is about creating the life you want to lead. I truly believe we all have that capacity. In that sense it might not be about learning something completely new, it’s mostly about reconnecting to that capacity that is already inside of us. By connecting to ourselves, to our dreams and passions we can consciously create our lives day after day. The workshop offers that opportunity to reconnect, to stop and pause and to play around with some fun and inspiring practices that support us to create fulfilling lives.

Is there any requirements or things you appreciate a workshop participant should have?
Very simple … an open mind :)

When you do / decide / dream about something new, what is your preferred style of learning?
When I do/ decide/ dream about something new, it’s very important to include all my senses and not to focus on one learning style. Brain research has proven that as long as you intensely imagine something, your brain can’t tell the difference if it’s imagined or real. Imagining means more than just seeing it, it’s about involving all your senses. When I think about a dream I think about where I am when that dream is realized, who is with me, what I am seeing, doing, hearing, smelling or even tasting and most importantly: what I am feeling. Research has proven that our heart is at least as important as our brain when it comes to creating our lives. More about that at the workshop ;)…

Do you have some locations or an environment where you enjoy the present most or which are particular resourceful for you?
I think it’s not necessarily about an environment, it’s about truly enjoying where I am and what I am doing. That allows me to be fully present and to be in flow, to forget everything else around me and to connect to pure joy and that feeling is one of the strongest ways to create. That being said, there are circumstances when this happens to me more often like when I am taking a walk in nature, when I’m playing music, or when I am traveling and discovering new places.

I heard you love making music, which kind of music are you into?
It can be all kinds of music, from beautiful instrumental pieces to Pop to Latin to Motown music. The most important thing to me is the message of the music and the way it makes me feel. When I create music, it’s important to me that there is meaning in the words, that it’s a message that I want to share and that it's born out of an authentic emotion. And maybe I’ll share a couple of songs at the workshop ;)

What are your expectations visiting Vienna, beside of the workshop?
I am very much looking forward to discovering this beautiful city, to catch up with friends and to meet wonderful people. Other than that I don’t really have concrete expectations. I am already so excited to combine the delivery of the workshop with traveling and sharing a couple of songs. Combining personal development with traveling and music is a dream that is coming true and I am very happy about it :)!

Could you share a secret? What is one thing you consider to do and haven't told anyone about?
It’s always exciting and scary at the same time to answer these sorts of questions … a couple of people know this but I can probably count them on one hand, so here it goes … One thing I would love to do, is to create an album with my own songs. The objective is not to sell a million copies and to become famous, but to enjoy the process of creating and sharing music ;).
