Don't Forget, Stay Weird

Image courtesy of Stuart Miles / FreeDigitalPhotos.net
Sometimes you need to remind me. I think I had times I was a bit to geekish. Too much pat of the mass doing things as always. For example I remember when I worked in publishing. I liked the job, companies, the industry, the people etc. And I much adapted to it. Quiet conservative I did what I was asked for and what always where done.
Not always and not extreme. There where of course times I jumped on new projects, visited customers, set up new things etc. And this is exactly what's new and adds new value. It is great to get out of the comfort zone, add some crazyness toward new things. Ask thereby: How can I add value to the world by staying weird and do what I enjoy to do?

Fire Alarm Appreciation

Deutsch siehe unten. German see below.
The Liffey Trust Center in Dublin. A new built apartment, in the North Wall district of Dublin 1. I lived there for 14 month on the 5th floor in a modern apartment on the corner. All works fine. Almost all. One weak spot was the fire alarm. Approximately every other week, during different daytimes the alarm goes on. There was never a fire but all the apartments have smoke detectors and they might be sensible.
Years before a trusted customer recommend me to find out in hotels the escape way as he had someone close in a serious situation. I made it a habit and I took the habit with me in the Liffey Trust. When the alarm rings, I jump on, take shoes and jacket while walking out, take the outside stairs, walk down in the main backyard on the 2nd level and down the big stairs toward the front of the house. The alarm is ringing loudly until some facility manager switches them off. Astonishing was that sometimes I was the only one, other people maybe peek out and ask and others ignore it at all.
I'm aware that most likely there wouldn't be a fire and even if as the building has wide open air corridors and balcony's. It was just the habit. If it is an emergency I ensured to act right, otherwise I would prepare for emergency and there was one additional factor: This was an opportunity to appreciate to be in a safe environment. I appreciate to be in a safe building with technology and a process that supports my safety.
No worries for the next alarm, just appreciation to be safe!

Movie Review: The Internship

Deutsch siehe unten / German below.
Two middle age sales reps of a watch company, Nick (Owen Wilson) and Billy (Vince Vaughn) become redundant as the watch business is decreasing and their CEO decides to settle down in Florida. Halfway desperate the salesguys looked for opportunities and in a funny approach while doing online job-search one of the guys applied for an internship at Google and convinced the other one.
With a lot more luck then performance the guys finally made it for the summer internship-program.
Surrounded in the middle of smart, geekish high performers in their early twen years the two appeared like aliens in the silicon valley HQ of Google. And as it is at IT companies people have to get challenged. In teams they have to fulfill a load of various tasks and just the best got offered to finally work for the IT giant.
All the top college students joined each other to form small teams but our Nick and Billy ended up with the “leftovers”, a super geek, a cosplay girl, and a Mr. mobile phone about all. After a few things went wrong in a funny approach the two guys used their experience to motivate the team and things worked out. Sometimes painful, always extremely funny the team with the lowest expectation finally made the best overall score.
This movie is satiric about the hiring processes in IT companies and have the very positive intend to demonstrate that values like commitment and bonding to a high performing generative team works under many and odd circumstances. Splendid, funny and motivating to watch!

Book Review: James Innes / Ultimate New Job

Deutsch siehe unten / German see below.
While there are many books how to get a job, write the best application and master job interviews there are relatively few that show you how to start a job. And this is essential. Many people who land a new job have busy and important times ahead to master a great start at their new job.

Of course you will find all the essentials such as: Handling and adjusting the job offer, master your first day, understanding the purpose of your new role, fit into, how to know what's relevant, get along in teams, managing your new boss etc. and it goes far beyond than just that. The Ultimate New Job is a full general work manual.
Each chapter is just a few pages long, contains a lot of highlighted items and summarizes the main point at the end of it. Because of that the concepts ensures that you can read it most effectively regardless if you want to get an in-depth preparation for the working world or you have to promptly start your new job tomorrow and want to get the best out of it.
The Ultimate New Job ist ein kompletter allgemeiner Berufsrattgeber.

Bold Enthusiasm

Whatever you are, be a good one“
Abraham Lincoln

I just lisend to the video about Brendon Burchard (posted below, minute 24) and a big question he asked is:

„Am I demonstrating bold enthusiasm?“

It seems so right for me. No matter what you do a bold enthusiasm makes you great. It drives you and you want to serve. You are thrilled to find ways to serve people which brings you back success.
Maintain your enthusiasm. Step into resources that create the best enthusiasm and enjoy the process.
GW

P.S. Interested in Brendon Burchard, see my book review about The Charge.

Was auch immer Du bist, sei gut darin.”
Abraham Lincoln

Egal was du machst, Enthusiasmus macht dich großartig darin. Er treibt dich an und du möchtest was gutes tun. Du bist begeistert und willst Wege finden anderen Menschen zu helfen was dich wiederum erfolgreich macht. Pflege deinen Enthusiasmus.

The Philosophers' Way

Walkway view. Pic: Christian Bienia
Deutsch siehe unten / German see below.
During the 5 years I lived in Germany I was very close to Heidelberg, a beautiful town, rich in history it has the oldest German university, a castle, many old buildings located at the Neckar river, surrounded by forests and mountains. I enjoyed to be there and one of my favorite spots in this town was the Philosophers' Walk. This walkway is located on the opposite river side then the castle and city center, stretches along the hill and offers beautiful views on the city and castle.
Even if it's a city attraction it's not the place of single significant historical events, rather it is a place which was early discovered by students to enjoy walks and keep their mind free.
Physical movements support our cognitive minds and keeping our body in motion is source for creativity, ideas and taping mental resources. The possibilities of stimulate mental capacities are endless, some people enjoy a walk, riding a bike, playing music, dancing, taking a shower, riding a skateboard, playing chess and much more. Einstein played the violin and ride sailboats and Mozart got many ideas while traveling in a coach. Often when we think back on times we were in our best states we often find ourselves active. For me, walks really support me in sharpening my ideas, making decisions and calming down. As I prefer to go on walks which offer a wide view and can see a rich part of a town it was obvious that the Philosophers' Walk attracted me. And it's not only Heidelberg, on various places I have my Philosophers's Walk. How about you, do you have a walk where you can keep your mind free? Or any other activity supporting your mental capacity?
I'm curious to hear, please write me or post here below.

Physische Bewegung bereichert unser kognitives Bewusstsein.

Book Review: Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time

Deutsche Version siehe unten / German version below.
Brian Tracy is a international top motivational speaker, leader of workshops and programs and author of many books and media programs of goal setting, time management and success. In „Eat That Frog“ he shows the reader 21 great ways out of procrastination. After reading in a few pages the subtitle are useless because you are so keen to take action. The frog metaphor stands for eating the biggest frog (biggest task) at the first thing in the morning and always focus at the biggest frog (most important task) at any given situation. Tracy guides through goalsetting, a-b-c-d-e tasking (a method for prioritizing), 80/20 rule or Pareto principle which means that 20% of a persons action create 80% of the results, motivational techniques such as positive selftalk, slicing and dicing the task and much more.

A very inspiring chapter, in my opinion, is „Leverage Your Special Talents“ where among others this three big questions wait for the reader:
  • What is it that you enjoy most about your work?
  • What is it that you do that gets you the most compliments and praise from other people?
  • What do you do that positively affects the work and performance of other people more than anything else?

As I found the books and materials of Brian Tracy very inspiring and motivational I wonder sometimes what prevents me to grab them immediately? I mean they drive you to take action. This maybe requires some future effort. And once I read Traceys books, as it was with „Eat that Frog“ I was so charged that I really strived for more and stretched myself this process turned out quiet comfortable. It is like momentum is created, endorphines came on flatrate and I'm in a positive addiction (oh, this is actually something described in this book as well ;)).
Don't worry about procratination, have fun reading this book. It's a short read for a great outcome!

Seine Themen umfassen u.a.
